What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is the ancient technique of painting with melted bee's wax.
Picture
The medium is made by combining melted bee's wax with melted damar crystals,
then straining out the impurities.

Each painted layer of wax is fused with a torch, and this process is repeated many times until the desired image is achieved.

The resulting liquid is then mixed with pigment, and painted on to a wood substrate.

Sometimes the surface is ironed and/or scraped to achieve different effects.
